2000-2001 Fulbrights
by TAA Staff
FOR COLLEGE faculty members, administrators and independent
scholars, the Fulbright Award represents a prestigious pat
on the back, as well as an opportunity to teach and research
abroad for one year. Since 1997, The Adjunct Advocate has
combed the full list of Fulbright winners, released each winter
by the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars,
for the names of adjunct faculty winners. Since the magazine
began tracking CIES results, adjunct faculty have won between
five and six percent of Fulbrights awarded.
According to Ms. Judy Pehrson, Director for External Relations
at CIES, the organization would like to award a larger percentage
of Fulbrights to adjunct faculty. However, traditionally,
the number of applications from adjunct faculty has been small,
usually fewer than 500 each year. CIES officials hope that
by reaching out directly to adjunct faculty at conferences
and through advertisements in higher education publications,
the number of Fulbright Award applications from the group
will rise.
The 2000-2001 winners of 745 Fulbright teaching and research
awards include 39 adjunct faculty. As in previous years, adjuncts
snagged five percent of the total awards given. The Adjunct
Advocate would like to congratulate these men and women, and
encourage our readers to take advantage of the Fulbright program.
In a forthcoming issue of the magazine, as we have done before,
we will profile five of this year’s adjunct faculty Fulbright
winners. A list of this year’s adjunct faculty Fulbright winners
