The Faculty are seeking to appoint a Departmental Lecturer in Medieval German from 1 October 2019 until 31 December 2022.

The Departmental Lecturer in Medieval German will contribute to the teaching of German within the Sub-faculty of German by offering 16 hours of lectures or seminars per year (to be determined in consultation with the Sub-faculty, but drawing on the appointee’s expertise). They will also be responsible for providing 8 hours a week of undergraduate tuition in German language and literature at Somerville College, and playing a part in running Modern Languages in Somerville.

The Departmental Lecturer in Medieval German will be expected to be able to teach all the set texts for the first year course in German (Prelims Papers III and IV); and for the second – fourth year students to give tutorials and classes for Paper VI, the medieval period paper, and paper IX, the medieval set text paper, as well as paper XII (special subject) options where appropriate, and to supervise extended or bridging essays as appropriate, as well as contributing to language teaching, primarily in the form of translation from German into English but including also grammar and prose (translation into German) in the First Year.

Applicants must possess: Exceptional fluency in German, and the ability to teach it at undergraduate levels within the Oxford course; exceptional fluency in English and the ability to teach translation into English; evidence of ability to produce high quality research work/publications of the highest quality within the field of German literature and culture; a good undergraduate degree in German; a PhD or DPhil in German with a focus on medieval German. The selection committee will, in exceptional cases, consider applications from those still to complete their doctorate, provided that they will have submitted it by 1 October 2019.
