The School of Mass Communication and Journalism at The University of Southern Mississippi at the Gulf Park Campus is seeking a one year Visiting Assistant Professor in film studies with the possibility for renewal. The film program at Southern Miss is the oldest in the state of Mississippi and located at the beautiful Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, MS. The program is focused on teaching film-making as an art form and help develop our students into well rounded total filmmakers.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for teaching undergraduate coursework in film studies, including but not limited to: introductory film courses, entry-level production courses, film theory, history, and criticism seminars.
Mentor undergraduate students toward student success in coursework and future endeavors, to include internships and jobs;
Participate in academic research and grantsmanship;
Engage in community relationship building around the film studies program;
Engage in service to the University, School, and professional associations;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Candidates should have Ph.D. in film studies or in a related discipline with a film specialization by the time of appointment; a strong research profile; evidence of strong teaching; commitment to fostering an inclusive campus environment; willingness and competence to teach a wide range of film classes, from general courses for non-majors and Introduction production classes to advanced core film studies courses in our BA degree in film.
The ideal candidate would be well-versed in film history and critical discourse and demonstrate the ability to teach a diverse range of film courses. Preferred candidate will be able to teach courses in Screenwriting and foundation production courses in addition to the film studies.
