Salary Range:

$9,033 for each 4 or 5 unit course. The Scene Shop Assistant position is equivalent to:

Winter quarter - 0.25 course load: $2,258.25

Spring quarter - 0.15 course load: $1,354.95

Purpose:

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Santa Clara University, the Jesuit, Catholic university in Silicon Valley, seeks applicants for a Quarterly Lecturer (non-tenure-track) to to co-teach a course in Rehearsal and Performance in Winter and Spring quarters, 2025. Specific assignments will be made according to the academic qualifications of the individual and programmatic need. Santa Clara University is on the quarter system, and the quarters are 10 weeks long with an 11th week for final examinations. The successful candidate will teach no more than 2 courses in any quarter and no more than four courses over the fall, winter and spring quarters. All classes will be presented in-person, however, if the county health and university health conditions deteriorate, the successful candidate may be asked to teach part of the course online. The successful candidate will work with students hands-on in the scene shop, guiding them through the process of being a scenic carpenter on a production.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Terminal degree (MFA/PhD) in Theatre Design/Production or a closely-related field. Applicants who are ABD or possess a Master's degree, accompanied by commensurate academic experience in Theatre Design/Production or a closely-related field (5-7 years of college or professional teaching) will be considered.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching Theatre Design/Production at the college level.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to carry out professional duties of position, working with department directors, designers, technical director and student work crews.
  • Collaborative work style and strong organizational skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with inclusive pedagogical practices that advance SCU goals of diversity and equity.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.
  • Intermediate proficiency in scenic carpentry.
  • Experience using power tools typical in a scenic shop.
  • Experience supervising and maintaining the scene shop.
  • Demonstrates understanding of common safety practices such as usage of PPE and proper usage of power tools.
  • Able to work by themselves if necessary.
  • Commitment to teaching theatre and dance within a liberal arts context.

RESPONSIBILITIES

TEACHING (100%)

Teaching duties will not exceed more than two courses in any quarter and no more than four in any academic year. Duties include but are not limited to:

1) Attend design and production meetings as requested.
2) Working with Scenic Designer, Technical Director, Theatre Operations Manager and student crews, paint scenery and acquire or create props, ready for technical rehearsal.

3) Work with the Technical Director to assist in teaching scenery construction skills to student work crews.
4) Must be able to work weekends.
5) Must be able to lift 50 lbs and climb stairs.

6) Fulfill other instructional or academic duties as appropriate as may be requested by the Chair of the Department.

SERVICE (0%)

This position does not require any service duties. You may be invited, but not required, to attend department meetings or activities.
