Description

Job Summary:

Teach undergraduate courses in Hawaiian performance, including hula and chant. Develop a syllabus and assignments that meet course objectives; conference with students, maintain records on and evaluate student performance. Provide chant and hula for important ceremonies, such as graduation. This is a part time position with per course compensation.

Compensation:

$1,150 per credit hour - Doctorate
$1,050 Per credit hour - Master's or Bachelor's with 5 years of relevant experience

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree & 5+ years of professional field related experience in the practice of hula and Hawaiian culture/language.
  • Previous experience teaching hula.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in area of hula performance as informed by Hawaiian culture and language.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or equivalent in the practice of hula, Hawaiian culture/ language.
  • Evidence of successful teaching of hula courses.
  • Extensive knowledge of Hawaiian culture and language and practical application of this knowledge.
  • Knowledge of Hula and its various genealogies and genres.
  • Strong commitment to inclusivity and diversity, and ability to interact effectively with diverse cultures and ethnic groups.
  • Ability to network with community organizations and programs to develop partnerships for the benefit of students, faculty, and the university.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Other Qualifications:

  • Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU's winter break, if necessary.
  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
  • Able to teach classes scheduled during days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Able to teach classes at multiple locations on Oahu.
  • Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilize excellent time and stress management skills.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:

  1. Develop syllabi in line with model syllabi, assigned textbooks, and department, college, and university policies (8%)
  2. Prepare individual classes; maintain records of student progress and assign grades (72%)
  3. Hold office hours and respond to student questions (1 hour/course) (12%)
  4. Participate in training sessions (3%)
  5. Perform other related duties as assigned (5%)
  • Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
