Purpose of Job

To teach undergraduate Genetics courses in the Department of Biological Sciences: BI 445-Genetics and related courses.Scope of Responsibilities

The adjunct faculty member must demonstrate success in the classroom by developing and using highly effective teaching strategies that meet the needs of diverse students; that promote the acquisition and application of knowledge, development of critical and creative learning, and problem-solving skills. The adjunct instructor assignments vary from semester to semester, depending upon the instructional needs of the department.Essential Job Functions

  • Demonstrate knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques appropriate to teaching adult students; instruct, manage, motivate, mentor, evaluate and advise them;
  • Interact with students in an appropriate, professional manner;
  • Employ a variety of formative and summative assessments to ensure that classroom instruction leads to student learning and the attainment of the student learning outcomes for the course;
  • Help students reach their academic, personal, and career goals and foster a safe environment that respects diversity, modeling respect and conveying confidence in every student's ability to learn;
  • Comply with departmental curriculum, grading standards, student performance data, attendance policies, textbook choices, and assessments;
  • Attend classes regularly, maintain active syllabi, and return reports, credentials, and other requested documents promptly;
  • Maintain effective written and communication with chair or designee;
  • Comply with all legal and ethical obligations, including FERPA, ADA, and other regulatory legislation;
  • Participate in training/workshops that are mandated for instructors.
  • Commit to furthering the mission, goals, and values of the Department of Biological Sciences and Alcorn State University.
  • Active participation in student recruitment and retention.

Qualifications

  • Terminal degree or Master's degree with 18 graduate credits in any of the following relevant disciplines: General Biology, Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Immunology, or closely related fields.
  • The candidate must have demonstrated teaching experience at the university level.
  • Ability to work with a diverse staff, faculty, and student population.
  • Working knowledge of common learning management systems such as BANNER and CANVAS.
  • Be proficient with standard office applications on personal computers.
