Oakes College at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of part-time lecturers to teach sections of College 1, the first course of UCSC's Academic Literacy Curriculum. College 1 is a required core course designed to help students develop academic and civic proficiency in reading and critical thinking. Students will develop understanding of academic ethos and habits of mind and practice that are tied to a sense of belonging and academic success. This course prepares students for success in other UCSC courses. There is no placement exam for College 1; enrollment in this course is not tracked by proficiency in reading, writing, or critical thinking.
Instructors meet with a seminar of about thirty students two or three times per week and present material from an established syllabus; assign and evaluate student work; meet with students in small groups; prepare grades, which may include narrative evaluations of student performance; hold weekly office hours; and carry out other typical instructional duties.
Oakes College focuses on social justice, community building and engagement, ethnic studies, and the sciences. Applicants should be able to draw from expertise in one or several of the major disciplinary subject areas such as arts, engineering, humanities, physical and biological sciences, and social sciences.
Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:
Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree)
Demonstrated effectiveness at working with students from a wide range of social, cultural, and academic backgrounds
Familiarity with current theory and research in critical and analytical reading
A minimum of two years' experience teaching critical and analytical reading, thinking, and/or writing at a four-year college or university
Demonstrated expertise in topics related to intersectionality, social identity, and social justice
Master's degree (or equivalent foreign degree) at the time of application; or a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent foreign degree) and completion of at least one year of a Ph.D. program at the time of application; or a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent foreign degree) and at least two years of teaching experience at the college level at the time of application.
Experience teaching critical and analytical reading, thinking, and/or writing at the college level.
Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit's instructional need and the availability of funding. Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters). Appointments may also be made during Summer Session.
