Position Summary:

Gettysburg College invites applications for a one-year term position as Visiting Assistant Professor/Lecturer in Sociology (https://www.gettysburg.edu/academics/sociology/ ) beginning August 2020. The teaching load for this position is three courses per semester.

Qualifications:

The Department of Sociology seeks a broadly trained sociologist who is well-grounded in both quantitative methods and theory and focused on undergraduate education in the tradition of the liberal arts. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching and/or service. Diversity, equity and inclusion are foundational to the mission of the college, and we strongly encourage applications from members of groups which have been historically under-represented in higher education. The college and the department therefore place high value on someone who will promote an environment of understanding of and respect for diversity in their service, teaching and research.

The successful candidate should also have a deep commitment to teaching and show evidence of scholarly engagement. They should be prepared to teach introduction to sociology; contribute to the core curriculum in statistics and methods; teach substantive courses in the area of specialization; and teach at least one inequalities course (i.e. disability or aging; or social stratification, race and ethnicity, gender, or sexuality). The department is particularly interested in someone who is able to teach statistics as well as substantive courses in one or more of the following areas: sociology of health and medicine, international migration, political sociology, or public culture. Candidates should have a PhD (or be ABD) in Sociology; teaching experience is highly desired.
