AMONG THE HIGHER education sites offering useful information to college faculty, the site for Women in Higher Education does not make the list. This is a shame, since the proportion of part-timers and one-year contract faculty around the country is probably more female than male. And networking is especially important for women, who often consider themselves out of the loop when it comes to finding out about jobs.
The Women in Higher Education Web site offers job information under the heading of "Career Connections," and you may want to try this out yourself at http://www.wihe.com/. Users may select "Faculty," or a region of the country to search. Unfortunately, the list is not subdivided by discipline, is occasionally out of date, and irregular in the amount of information provided. In some cases, the on-line listing is hyperlinked; that is, the listing is linked to the university's job listing or to the e-mail address of the personnel director. In other cases, however, you are on your own. Where is Rio Hondo College, exactly? Roger Williams University? More clicking and searching is going to be needed to follow up many of these leads.
